I finished the Cabled Alpaca hat for my mom and I washed and blocked it yesterday before we were to go to my parents for Christmas there.

I then had to dry it fast. So I spun it in the washer and got out the blow dryer. When I was done with the blow dryer it was still a little damp so I had a brilliant idea, I would put it on top of the wood stove. It wasn't too hot, and if I just put it there for a little while it would finish drying. So I put it on there, added some more wood ( mistake #1) and shut the door. The last load of wood we got is a little damp so stuff doesn't catch strait away. So I was safe. My friend came over to get her kids I was watching and we were sitting and talking and I noticed the fire caught so I asked the oldest to flip the hat over and pull out the damper. (Mistake #2).We sat and talked some more and I told the 2nd oldest to go put clothes on so we could leave (it's Christmas break, jammies are ok daily wear at our house) I them smell what I think it poop. I ask my friend if her 18 month old had poop. She checks, nope, no poop. I ask her if she can smell that too? She confirms the smell of something poop like. We then check the other kids. Nope, no poo. About 15 mins later I ask her again if the baby was stinky. Nope, not so much. Then all of a sudden it came to me, the hat! I jumped up off the sofa, exclaimed "@#$(&)@(#&)@#@(&), Crap!"Yanked it off the top of the stove and turned it over.

It doesn't wash out and it wasn't cheap hand painted Baby Alpaca yarn. I happened to get enough of the yarn to make a vest last year so I wrapped up two more skeins for my mom, one for a hat and one for a scarf and gave it to her. I also gave her the hat. It is now the fanciest chore hat in all of the county.

Well, it's a beautiful hat except for that little brown spot...
@mschoir01 - It helps to make the cable stand out with the hand painted yarn and all.
Oh no! It's a lovely hat, I would have been furious!
